Nigerian Man Jailed For 2 Years For Driving Into Police Officer In The UK (Photo)

UK
A 22 year old Nigerian man, Michael Oluwafemi Adenibi, pictured above has been sentenced to 2 years imprisonment by a UK court for driving into a police officer while trying to evade arrest along Shepherd Bush road in London in October last year.

He was also charged for driving without a valid license and vehicle insurance.

Michael is accused of driving into Police Officer Sue Thomson when she tried to stop him for questioning.

When called upon to testify at the Isleworth Crown Court today, PC Thompson said she feared she was going to die when Michael consciously drove into her, clearing her with his unregistered car until she landed on high impact on his bonnet.

“Fortunately I don’t remember too much about what happened immediately after being hit, as I was knocked unconscious, but I have replayed many, many times what I do recall in my head since that day.

I remember getting out from our car and seeing the driver mount the pavement and being extremely concerned he would hit someone.

I remember thinking he has to be stopped as he is dangerous and then I was on the bonnet.

I couldn’t hear anything or see anything, and all I could hear was a loud ringing in my ears.

I was terrified. I thought that I had died. I was thinking about my nephew and how I wouldn’t see him grow up or that I would never see my partner again.

I thought of my Mum and Dad and how I had let them down as I promised that I wouldn’t get hurt at work and how sad I was going to make them”she said.

Michael pleaded guilty to the offence.

Congrats: Phyno Acquires Multi-Million Naira Property In Lekki

phyno_Naijaloaded
The Nigerian rapper and record producer, Azubike Chibuzo Nelson, popularly known as Phyno has joined the league of showbiz stars acquiring properties on the island.

The rapper just acquired a multi-million naira house at Shelvey View Estate, located at Chevron Drive, Lekki. The property is a three-flat duplex.

Phyno has been working on the acquisition for some time now, and he has finally scaled the hurdle.

Since Phyno made his first hit, he has become one of the most consistent artistes, churning out one hit after the other. His vocal and lyrical prowess has also ranked him among the most featured artistes in the country.

Like Bracket, J Martins and May D, Phyno is another artiste mentored by the P-Square brothers and their elder brother, Jude Engees Okoye.

In 2014, he acquired a brand new Bentley Gt Coupe automobile worth N30million.

The artiste, who sports a Mohawk hairstyle, initially started up as a producer in 2003, and did beats for artistes like 2Shotz, J Martins, Mr. Raw, Flavour, Timaya, Ruggedman and Bracket. In 2010, he then decided to try his hands on the other side of the booth, starting his own rap career, and the result was his first official album “No Guts, No Glory.”
Last year he was enmeshed in a gay scandal, having appeared to be kissing fellow artiste, Kcee in a viral picture.
But he swiftly denied the rumour , saying:

“The only thing that was in my head when I saw the picture was where did this happen. I said back then that a gangstar like me could not have been involved in something like that. The fact is that, I am not a gangstar and I don’t want people to see me in that light. I think I am too serious and cool for that kind of thing. People say I am gay. That’s laughable because these same people reported some time ago that I impregnated a girl. So you can see that these things don’t work together. My life is all about entertainment, as long as the people are happy about what they read, I am happy too.”

Shekau Flees Nigeria As Military Deploys Special Forces To Track Him

Boko Haram Nl

As the military deploys its special force units to track the fleeing leader of the Boko Haram sect, Abubakar Shekau, there are strong indications that the terror kingpin may have fled Nigeria through the help of Islamic State (ISIS) groups operating in East and North Africa.

Saturday Sun gathered that with the recent loss of his group’s caliphate headquarters, Gwoza to the Nigerian troops and the invasion of Sambisa forest by a detachment of the nation’s special force units deployed from their base in Makurdi, Benue State, the Boko Haram leader saw his capture as imminent.

According to dependable military intelligence sources, Shekau had to send emissaries to ISIS affiliates with strongholds in East and North Africa to pave the way for his escape to their region from where he intends to coordinate his group’s activities or ultimately relocate to ISIS headquarters in the Middle East.

One of the sources revealed that “having discovered that he was being tracked through his Thuraya satellite phone, Shekau recently dropped the line and handset totally to evade capture.

But the last satellite image of him and other intelligence pieced together by forces on the battle frontline show his desperation to escape from the country to parts of East Africa or North Africa where ISIS is having some footholds.”
The source, a red neck military chief further told Saturday Sun that “as part of moves being made by Shekau, he now relocates with fewer guards and limited number of lieutenants knowing his movement schedule.

This is to frustrate intelligence gathering efforts by security forces and avoid attracting the focus of satellite image capturing technology deployed by some foreign super powers and shared with the Nigerian security forces.”

It was gathered that as part of his bid to escape the heat of ongoing military operations in the Northeast Nigeria, Shekau has in the last few weeks changed his look and physical appearance dramatically.

“A recent intelligence from one of our foreign partners shows the Boko Haram leader clean shaven which totally alters his look. That heightens our curiosity about his motive, before we got other evidence that pointed to the fact that he was trying to cross the border”, the source added.
The militant group had on March 7 pledged allegiance to the leadership of ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

The pledge, which was made by Shekau, who addressed himself as the Imam of Jamaátu Ahlus Sunnah Lidda’awati Wal Jihad (Boko Haram) and was addressed to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi al-Husseini al-Qurashi, the leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) or Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

“From your brother in Allah, Abu Mohamed Abu Bakr bin Mohammed Shekau, the Imam of Jamaátu Ahlus Sunnah Lidda Awaati Wal Jihad to the Caliph of Muslims Abubakar Abu Bakr Ibrahim ibn Awad ibn Ibrahim al-Husseini al-Qurashi.
“We are sending you this message, following what Allah said in his Quran (And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allah and be not divided among yourselves) and what the Prophet, Peace be upon him said (Whoever died and he had not Imam, died by death of ignorance).

“In submission to the order of Allah “Azza wa Jal”, and submission to the order of the prophet, peace be upon him to not separate from each other and to stay united as Ummah as Jammaaáh, We announce our allegiance to the Caliph of the Muslims Ibrahim ibn Awad ibn Ibrahim al-Husseini al-Qurashi and will hear and obey in times of difficulty and prosperity, in hardship and ease, and to endure being discriminated against and not to dispute about rule with those in power, except in case of evident infidelity,” read an English-language translation of the video broadcast in Arabic.
ISIS has a few foreign groups from which it has accepted pledges, including Ansar Bayt al-Maqdisi in the Egyptian Sinai and groups of fighters in strategic areas of Libya. ISIS has a shura council that dictates the group’s strategic direction but takes a devolved, hands-off approach on tactical matters.

A week after the pledge of allegiance by Boko Haram, ISIS leadership in a statement accepted the militant group into its fold, with a promise to work with it to establish an ISIS cell in West Africa. In an audio message, a man who claimed to be the spokesperson for the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, ISIS, said the group’s aim of establishing a caliphate has now been expanded to West Africa.

As earlier exclusively by Saturday Sun, Shekau had stayed in crisis-ridden Northern Mali to coordinate the training and operations of the militant group before they were flushed out of there by a joint French and African forces, including Nigerian troops. He thereafter crossed the porous borders to join his foot soldiers in Borno State.

“He may not find it easy to return to Mali this time round but we suspect he may be targeting East Africa or parts of North Africa such as Libya and Egypt where some islamist groups are causing instability now”, a senior military chief involved in the prosecution of the war against the militant group told Saturday Sun, adding that he cannot categorically say whether Shekau had indeed escaped or still in the country.

“On whether he has successfully escaped from Nigeria, I have no such information but at the same time I cannot rule that out because of his level of desperation to flee and his links with some other groups within the region and even beyond”, the source stressed, adding:

“What we strongly believe at this moment is that he is still within our reach or that of our neighbours; especially Niger and Chad. He may find it difficult to move beyond these borders and may end up returning to one of our remote villages in the North-East to hide.”

The source also stated that Shekau had told some of his close lieutenants that he would rather die from gunshot from his guards than being killed by the Nigerian troops whom he regards as “infidels.”

“One of his captured commanders once disclosed that Shekau had given instructions to his personal guards to shoot him dead in the face of a confrontation with our troops who he calls infidels. He believes that makes him a martyr”, the source added.

When contacted on the information that Shekau had fled the country between the last week of March and the first two weeks of April, the acting Director of Public Relations, Nigeria Army, Colonel Sani Usman said, “We have an ongoing war against terrorists in this country and we are determined by all means and what it takes to eliminate, capture all terrorists and destroy all their known camps.

“If in the process, any of their leaders is captured, so be it because the whole war is not about an individual. We are also determined to arrest all of them dead or alive.”

Abortion Kills 34,000 Women In Nigeria Every Year

MAIN--Silhouette-Pregnant-Woman
More than 34,000 young women die from abortion and its complications every year according to statistics reeled out by the President General of Umuada Igbo Nigeria and in the Diaspora, Dr. Kate Ezeofor.

According to Ezeofor, who addressed rural women in Amesi, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State on Wednesday, a recent study showed the burden of abortion is even more destructive.

She said the study showed that for every one girl that died as a result of abortion, 20 others were impaired for life.
The Umuada Igbo leader said most of the fatal abortions resulted from attempts to terminate unwanted pregnancies using quacks.

Ezeofor was represented by Mrs. Philomena Nnamani at a sensitisation seminar held for rural women in the community on women’s reproductive health and rights and safe family planning method.

She said the death of a woman worsened the very bad state of infant mortality in Nigeria.

She said UmuadaIgbo had been going round Igboland organising seminars and programmes to teach families to practise family planning, how to space their children to attain a healthy and better family.

Don’t Pay For Bail Again – Police IG Warns Nigerians

police

Over the period, the police authorities have stressed that the payment for bail at police stations is illegal.
Again, the Acting Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, has stated that it is improper for police officers to request for money from suspects for bail.

Arase warned that he will no longer accept such from his men because his administration will have zero tolerance for corruption.

The police chief said he will not hesitate to prosecute any officer found guilty of such crime.

Arase, addressing officers at his maiden visit to the Lagos State Police Command in Ikeja, also warned that henceforth, every police officer must have sufficient evidence to arrest and interrogate any suspect, which is the normal practice worldwide.

The police boss said he is ready to “resurrect the Enugu Intelligence Training School” to enhance the intelligence gathering of the Force. He added that officers would be retrained regularly to keep them abreast of the latest form of policing.

“I want to discourage custodian approach to policing,” Arase said, explaining that “this will reduce the cases of seeking for bail and unnecessary detention of suspects in our cells.”

“To put a stop to the issue of bribery, we have a platform in the Nigeria Police; in the intelligence department attending to all complains especially in the area of corruption,” he stated.

Arase advised his men to “feel free to send any complaint to that department,” stressing that “bail is free and all those offering money to the police are also corrupt.”

“I am passionate about the intelligence school that is why I am determined to invest on capacity building.
I am going to resurrect the Enugu Intelligence Training School and ensure that officers are trained and retrained.

They need to be up to date with the modern trend of investigation. It’s obvious that they do things out of ignorance,” the top cop said.

Denrele Edun Is Getting Married

The popular Channel O VJ and former Sound City presenter Denrele Edun, who is always in the news for his rather out-of-the-way fashion statements, is set to get hitched this year.
Denrele Edun Is Getting Married
Denrele Edun
This really comes as a shock because the sexuality of the weird presenter is still unclear.
It will be recalled that during an interview on Twitter with Kimani off air on February 22, 2015, Denrele might have revealed that he is indeed gay. When he was asked if he was gay, he replied: “Being gay is a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it!”
But during an interview with Saturday Punch last February, the entertainer had said that although he had a lady in his life, he was not fully committed.
The entertainer has probably changed his mind and is ready to walk down the aisle with his lady love. In a telephone conversation with Saturday Beats, Denrele said that he would be getting married this year.

“It is true that I am about to get married but it is not now. I would get married later this year. It was meant to be a secret but I don’t know how everybody has heard. I just hope ‘bad bele’ people would not jinx the marriage for me and make the girl that wants to marry me change her mind. She is the same girl I spoke about with you during our last interview. I cannot explain how the girl captured my heart but everyone would find out on the D-Day. I don’t want to share the identity of my wife now. When the time comes, people would know who she is,”he said.

I Have Not Given Up On My Political Ambition - 9ICE

The Nigerian musician Abolore Akande, popularly known as 9ice, has revealed that he has not given up on his political ambition.
In an interview with Vanguard the musician talks about his ambition to become the governor of Oyo state.
I Have Not Given Up On My Political Ambition - 9ICE
”9ice”
Read excerpts from the interview below:
On lessons he learnt from his experience in politics:
“I’ve learnt that Nigeria lacks leadership. It’s ‘moneyticians’ that they see, and they have no choice but to follow whoever they see. During the course of my campaign, I learnt a lot, and I got closer to the people. I listened to their yearnings, and realized that they want a lot of things, but are not getting what they want.
I will also implore people who have the passion to lead their people to offer themselves up for service. The people that we have there now are not leaders; they’re just there for whatever they’ll gain.”
On his ultimate ambition:
“My ultimate ambition in politics is to become the governor of Oyo State. However, I’ll still run for the Federal House of Representatives to serve my constituency in the next election. I believe I can serve in that position very well, and I also know that I stand the chance to become the governor of Oyo State.”
On his plans for the people as the Special Adviser to the Oyo State governor on Youths:
“My plans are to spring up so many ideas that I already have at the back of my mind. Initiatives like the Governor’s Cup in terms of Sports, and also by organizing debates. The era of debates has died, and I think we need to encourage the brilliant students who have the capacity for that in Oyo State. I intend to present such students to the governor so they can be supported academically, and if the powers that be support the idea, then I think we’re good to go.”
On how he intends to combine his role as a public official and an artiste:
“I don’t think one disturbs the other. My political office is during the day as Abolore Akande, and music is performed at night by 9ice. I think I have already differentiated the two.”
On his plans to work towards regulating the industry in his own way:
“Definitely! That’s one of the reasons why I’m in politics. People in this industry complain every day, but there will be no change if we don’t participate. The more we are in government, the better it will be for us.”
9ice, born as Alexander Abolore Adegbola Adigun Alapomeji Ajifolajifaola is a Nigerian musician. He is a south-westerner from Ogbomoso in Oyo state but he grew up in the district of Bariga in Lagos.
He is known for his use of Yoruba language in his music, but mixes the Yoruba proverbs with English, broken English, Hausa and Ibo sometimes.

The Gongo Aso crooner contested for the Federal House of Representatives, Ogbomosho North/Ogbomosho South/Orire Federal Constituency on the platform of his party, All Progressive Congress (APC) but lost out at the primaries in the just-concluded general elections. 9ice was later appointed as the special adviser to the Oyo state governor, Abiola Ajimobi, on youths.

Rescued Victims Say Boko Haram Is In Trouble

Women rescued from Boko Haram in the Samisa Forest have said that the insurgents are experiencing a serious shortage of arms and fuel, which is causing tension between the sect militants and commanders.

Girls and women rescued from Sambisa in April, 2015

The news emerged on May 4, Monday, after the rescued women had been interviewed, Vanguard reports.
Nearly 700 women have been freed over the past week by the Nigerian army. The victims disclosed that the terrorists had been complaining to their captives about lack of weapons and ammunition. Many fighters had to carry sticks and some of the vehicles had no gasoline.

Aisha Abbas, aged 45, told how the insurgents had gradually run out of guns. She also told Reuters that the Chibok girls might have been sold off or married to Boko Haram commanders.
The mother of two, taken in April from Dikwa, said:

“They said the Chibok girls were married off this year. Some sold to slavery, then others (militants) each married two or four of the girls.”

It was additionally learned from two rescued women that even the wife of their captors’ leader, Adam Bitri, openly criticized him and later escaped.

Binta Ibrahim, an 18-year-old young woman from Adamawa state said:

“One evening in April, Boko Haram followers stood before us and said ‘Our leaders don’t want to give us enough fuel and guns and now the soldiers are encroaching on us in Sambisa. We will leave you’.

“They threatened us, but after they left, we were happy and prayed the soldiers would come and save us.”

Meanwhile, it was reported yesterday that the military had arrested a man who allegedly specialised in supplying fuel and food to Boko Haram.

Recounting the military operation, some of the women said that on the day of the rescue, as the army approached the camp the captives refused to flee with Boko Haram. Following which the militants started stoning them.

Salamatu Mohamed recalled:

“We heard bullets flying around and laid on the floor.

“Some of the women were crushed (by army vehicles) and others wounded by bullets. Eighteen were killed. We counted them; they included infants.”

The victims were also constantly threatened that they would be taken to Abubakar Shekau, deep in the forest.

A 22-year-old mother Hanatu Musa quoted the fighters as saying that their leader had deceived them into fighting and killing in the name of religion.

Medical examinations showed that the insurgents had impregnated about 214 of the rescued women and girls.

Commenting on the situation, Kashim Shettima, the Borno state governor, alleged that the insurgents did so to leave the next generation of jihadists. He noted that “children fathered by them [Boko Haram] are likely to share their ideology later in life and succeed their parents in the years to come”.

The Indian filmmaker, who is cited in the media as one of the most commercially successful actors of Hindi cinema, was declared guilty of culpable homicide yesterday and sentenced to five years in prison, almost 13 years after he killed a man sleeping on a sidewalk in Mumbai and injured four others by running them over with his SUV.

Khan was also charged with negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. The actor had said previously that it was his driver that was driving the car on the day of the accident. However, the judge told the dejected actor, “You were driving the car.”

The news channel NDTV reported that the judge rejected the actor’s repeated denials over the past decade that he was behind the wheel. The Bollywood star listened to the verdict with tears in his eyes, while local media reported that members of his family present in the courtroom broke down in tears.

The handsome 49-year-old actor will become the second popular Bollywood actor to be imprisoned in the past two years, following Sanjay Dutt, star of a series of gangster movies, who was jailed for possession of weapons linked to several bombings in Mumbai in 1993.

Recall that the Jara co-host had jokingly talked about Jim Iyke’s failed relationship with the popular actress Nadia Buari, who recently gave birth to twins. Uti said things that Jim termed ‘defamatory comments’, as they did not go down well with the Nollywood actor. This was revealed when one of Iyke’s aides told reporters the actor was angry about what was said and planned to confront Uti whenever he saw him. Uti has since apologized.
Uti took to his Instagram post last night to apologize to Jim saying:

My sincere apologies to one of the greatest Nollywood icons of our time. @jim.iyke .. I’m sincerely and deeply sorry for the insensitive joke/post made yesterday. As one of my favorite and most respected actors I will never set out to intentionally disrespect you brother. Buhari's Throw Back Photos

President-elect,  Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), can be described as a man who has seen it all. From his days in the Nigerian military, to his sojourn in the ministry of petroleum and then as a politician, Buhari can be said to have stood the test of time.

Though, the former Head of State is not known as a social person, Buhari’s past achievements are well documented in the Nigerian media and beyond. His life is one that depicts excellence, achievement and service.

Madailyist.com recently compiled a pictorial history of the 72-year old Daura-born retired general. See the photos below:

In 1985, Buhari was himself overthrown in a coup led by General Ibrahim Babangida on August 27th, and other members of the ruling Supreme Military Council (SMC) ostensibly, because he insisted on investigating allegations of fraudulent award of contracts in the Ministry of Defence.

Meanwhiile, the Ohaneze Ndigbo have tasked the incoming Buhari administration to implement the 2014 National Conference report.

APC Warns President Jonathan Against His Aides

Nigerians may have expected that the bad blood between the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressive Congress (APC) would have been laid to rest by now, following the latter’s victory.

APC Warns President Jonathan Against His Aides
National Secretary of the APC, Lai Mohammed Photo:completenewsng.com
However, the APC in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by its national publicity secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, cautioned President Goodluck Jonathan against his aides, a copy obtained from Vanguard.

The party urged President Jonathan to call his aides to order and stop them from overheating the polity with their careless statements, especially in regard to the transition of power on May 29.

The APC acknowledged the fact that although the PDP had agreed that it is suffering from ‘post-election (defeat) trauma’, but said that was not a reason to disrupt the nation’s peace by displaying a crab mentality.
The party, which accepted that the PDP may be deeply traumatized by its loss in the recent general elections, described as provocative and ill-intentioned a statement credited to the special adviser to the president on political affairs, Prof. Rufai Alkali.

“Prof. Alkali doesn’t know what he is saying. How does he expect us to plan when the PDP-led FG has bluntly refused to cooperate with us in ensuring a successful transition? As we write, the Transition Committee of the FG has yet to hold a single meeting with our own Transition Committee, neither have they given us a line of handover note. As a matter of fact, the Jonathan Administration has said the handover notes will not be ready until the third week of May, meaning just a week before the handover. What time then do we have to scrutinize the handover notes? How can we plan when we don’t even know which projects they have, which ones they have completed and which ones are outstanding? How can we plan when we don’t even know how many barrels of oil are sold per day?” APC queried

The country’s major opposition party stated that the fact that Prof. Alkali cannot distinguish between the Inauguration Committee and Transition Committee is a display of the mediocrity that floods the Jonathan-led government and which brought its downfall.

“While their Inauguration Committee has been meeting with ours, their Transitional Committee has yet to even meet with ours. How then can Prof. Alkali justify his statement that the Jonathan Administration has been in a ‘transition mode’? Is it part of their transition mode that President Jonathan has been engaged in a rash of feverish last-minute appointments that, though may not have breached any known law, are patently in bad faith, morally repugnant and indecorous. They say they are in office until May 29th, but pray, are appointments the only function of a government? Are there no problems crying for attention, such as the intractable fuel scarcity, the worsening power situation, the grounded economy and the missing Chibok girls? Is it part of their transition mode that Jonathan’s Minister of Power has virtually been reading the riot act to the incoming government, condescendingly warning it not to even consider reversing the power sector privatization because its gains are ”very obvious?” Do they understand the implication of their gratuitous and unsolicited advice? If their power sector reforms have been so successful, would Nigeria’s power situation have hit perhaps its lowest point in a long long time as we have it now?” APC said.

The APC said that in the interests of peace it would not fall into the plot of the Jonathan-led government, since the PDP was determined to provoke the incoming government by creating confusion and even sabotaging the transition.

The party restated its earlier advice to the PDP, by urging them to overcome the election defeat trauma and prepare to be a challenging opposition to the incoming government.

“They must however realize that being in opposition is not a walk in the park but like running a marathon in the desert where there are no oases or shades. The sooner they realize that the better for them,”  the APC said.

The PDP has been having an internal crisis since it suffered defeat to the APC presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari in the March 28 presidential election.

The PDP is still finding it difficult to absorb the shock and restrategise on how to make a formidable opposition party to the incoming government of the General Buhari-led APC.

Buhari Must Probe Jonathan

Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerged winner of the March 28 presidential election and President Goodluck Jonathan will be handing over power to him on May 29. During the campaign periods, APC, who promised Nigerians ‘change’, said they will fight corruption in the country.

However, it appears Buhari has no plans of probing government officials who served before May 29 when he will assume office, including President Goodluck Jonathan.
In this piece Naij.com’s contributor, Chidi Okoye calls on the president-elect to probe Jonathan. According to him, an extensive probe into the finances of the country under Jonathan’s administration must be launched.
Opinion Highlight:

* Jonathan needs to be probed.
* Buhari needs to break the jinx.
* Buhari must not ignore the large sums spent on his campaign.
* Buhari must not disappoint Nigerians

President-elect Muhammadu Buhari has left me slightly confused. From campaign statements saying that no government official that served before May 29 when he will assume office, including President Goodluck Jonathan, will be probed in his much touted anti-corruption campaign, he has turned around to vow that his administration will probe the alleged $20 billion missing crude revenue. I hope the old man has not become senile.

I also hope that his earlier statements were part of a Machiavellian strategy to garner the needed support to win elections; because the fact remains that any campaign against corruption that does not target people being speculated to have looted public funds prior to May 29 is doomed for failure. Buhari would need to break this jinx we have in Nigeria where no president has ever probed his predecessor. Despite the staggering amounts recovered from foreign bank accounts of late former military dictator, Sani Abacha, our country is yet to carry out an extensive probe of his regime and his family has continued to live in opulence with streets named after their patriarch.

We cannot continue like this. The recently released forensic report conducted by PwC on the alleged $20 billion should serve as the spring board for a wide reaching probe of the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan. The report does not confirm that this figure is missing, but it does expose massive underhand dealings in our very opaque oil industry. Buhari would need to probe and expose any ties the beneficiaries may have had with the president. Having served as the pioneer head of the oil regulatory body, he has the advantage of a bit of insider knowledge.

Furthermore, an extensive probe into the finances of the country under President Goodluck Jonathan must be launched. We have seen allegations of obscene amounts spent during his campaign. We would need the incoming Buhari administration to follow the money trail and tell us if there was any pilfering of our public wealth. We have seen the president embroiled in a recent land acquisition controversy in Abuja. Buhari would need to look into that matter and show whether there was any wrongdoing in the process and that the said land was acquired by money within the budget of President Goodluck Jonathan’s earnings.

And while we are at it, Buhari must not ignore the equally obscene amounts spent on his campaign. There have been allegations that former Governor Bola Tinubu of Lagos State, a key sponsor of his campaign and party, corruptly enriched himself with public funds. We need clarity on this and the various sources of the billions that the APC spent on their impressive campaign. Such close allies as Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State and Senator Bukola Saraki have various allegations around their necks, they too must be probed.

Buhari must start at the top; because only then would he have the moral right to effectively clean house. While he is at it, all former presidents and heads of state must also pass through this scrutiny. Only then will he be able to beam his searchlight elsewhere and begin to actualise a thorough cleansing of the system. This will greatly impact on the numerous socialist initiatives that formed part of his campaign promises. Faced with dwindling oil revenue, Nigeria needs all the money it can get; and recovering the estimated billions of dollars stolen from the commonwealth will greatly help.

Anything less than this would mean that we have voted an illusion of change. It would mean that business would continue as usual. It would mean that a person like Arthur Eze, notoriously rich and a financier of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), will continue to visit Buhari and make his cheques available to the All Progressives Congress (APC) when it takes over government. It would mean that Nigeria would continue to bleed heavily due to the several bites that corruption has taken at it. It would mean that we really cannot move forward as a nation.

Millions of Nigerians voted for Buhari because of his perceived tough anti-corruption stance and because they believe that he is our last chance at having a real go at the malaise. He must not disappoint them. President Goodluck Jonathan has made the job easy for him by recently stating that he is open to a probe and will remain in the country after he leaves office. If Buhari spends the first year of his administration exposing the corrupt dealings of past leaders, Nigerians, I am sure, would forgive him for any sector that may be neglected as a result.

The day we have a former president or head of state prosecuted and jailed for corrupt enrichment while in office, that is the day that real change will come to Nigeria. If this does not happen under the Buhari administration, it is unlikely to ever come to pass. And Nigeria will be poorer for it.

President Jonathan implicated in contracts scam

President Goodluck Jonathan has been implicated in the awarding of multi-million dollars Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) contracts to two factitious firms, according to The Nation.

President Jonathan Implicated In Contracts Scam
With less than a month to hand over, President Jonathan has come under scrutiny for making last minutes appointments

The contracts in question were said to have been awarded by the president to Messrs CTOW Terminal & Marine Services and Ibejige Services Limited, two unregistered ghost companies in defiance of due process.

Added to the fact that the companies are not registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), they also do not have a known address.

Finding by The Nation, indicates that the president’s approval for the contracts was contained in a letter last year to the NPA through the Federal Ministry of Transport on August 14, 2014.

The short duration of three days in which the approval was made has also raised suspicion  considering the bureaucracy that slows down such  transactions.

Speaking on the controversial contract, a senior official of the NPA said: “Was the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) involved before the President gave his approval and the contract was awarded by NPA? What was the role of the supervising minister in this regard? Answers to these questions are very essential because if I am approving a contract to any company and my minister and the officials of the agency cannot verify for me whether the company is registered; then I don’t know what they are doing as the head of that organisation.

“If the President, who awarded the contract did not know, the Managing Director of NPA ought to seek confirmation from CAC and his head of legal department.

“With the award of this contract, the President, his minister and the sacked managing director of NPA have created a wrong impression before the in-coming administration that many other unregistered companies got multimillion dollar contracts under the out-going administration to siphon public fund.”

The controversies raised by the award of this contract appears to give credibility to the allegations by the All Progressives Congress (APC) a week ago that Goodluck Jonathan administration was involved in last last-minute looting of the nation’s resources through hurried recruitment into the public service and rushed privatisation of key financial institutions.

Mourinho Is Greater Than Wenger & Guardiola – Fabregas

The Spanish international midfielder believes the Portuguese coach has a “magic touch” and believes his desire to win places him above Pep Guardiola and Arsene Wenger

Cesc Fabregas has claimed that Jose Mourinho is the best manager he has played under.
Chelsea wrapped up their first Premier League title in five seasons with a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday and Fabregas believes Mourinho’s influence on that triumph cannot be underestimated, crediting his winning mentality as a key factor in Chelsea’s success.

The Spaniard has worked under esteemed coaches such as Pep Guardiola, Vicente del Bosque and Arsene Wenger in his career, but says that Mourinho is number one.

“He (Mourinho) just loves winning,” the 28-year-old said. “I’m not just saying other managers I have played under don’t, but he has some edge that goes above anyone else I have ever been with.

“The mentality shows every single training session, or game. I now understand why he has won what he has won in his career.

“Yes, Mourinho has a touch of magic, 100 per cent. He knows how to manage a team, he knows how to get the best out of you, and that’s what you want from a manager. 100 per cent.”

Fabregas also warned the Blues’ rivals that this season could be just the beginning of a protracted spell of dominance for Mourinho’s side.

“Hopefully it will be the start of a new era, a new team. Hopefully the new players now feel this winning mentality can go on for a long time,” he added.

“Even obviously we have the likes of John Terry, Didier Drogba, Petr Cech, Branislav Ivanovic and Jon Obi Mikel, they have all been here seven or eight years, even longer.

“I have always said since the beginning of the season that it is a very young talented team, and that as well is one of the causes that made me sign for the club, is that, potentially, this team can be one of the best in Europe.”

President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua (16 August 1951 – 5 May 2010), also known as Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’adua, was the President of Nigeria and the 13th Head of State.

He served as governor of Katsina State in northern Nigeria from 29 May 1999 to 28 May 2007.

He was declared the winner of the controversial Nigerian presidential election held on 21 April 2007, and was sworn in on 29 May 2007.

He was a member of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Early life

Yar’Adua was born into an aristocratic Fulani family in Katsina; his father, a former Minister for Lagos during the First Republic, held the royal title of Mutawalli (custodian of the treasury) of the Katsina Emirate, a title which Yar’Adua has inherited.

He started his education at Rafukka Primary School in 1958, and moved to Dutsinma Boarding Primary School in 1962.

He attended the Government College at Keffi from 1965 until 1969. In 1971 he received a Higher School Certificate from Barewa College.

He attended Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria from 1972 to 1975, attaining a BSc in Education and Chemistry, and then returned in 1978 to achieve an M.Sc Degree in Analytical Chemistry.
Professional career

Yar’Adua’s first employment was at Holy Child College in Lagos (1975–1976). He later served as a lecturer at the College of Arts, Science and Technology in Zaria, Kaduna State, between 1976 and 1979.

In 1979 he began working as a lecturer at College of Art Science, remaining in this position until 1983, when he began working in the corporate sector.

He worked at Sambo Farms Ltd. in Funtua, Katsina State as its pioneer General Manager between 1983 and 1989.

He served as a Board Member, Katsina State Farmers’ Supply Company between 1984 and 1985, Member Governing Council of Katsina College of Arts, Science and Technology Zaria and Katsina Polytechnic between 1978 and 1983, Board Chairman of Katsina State Investment and Property Development Company (KIPDECO) between 1994 and 1996.

Yar’Adua served as a director of many companies, including Habib Nigeria Bank Ltd. 1995–1999; Lodigiani Nigeria Ltd. 1987–1999, Hamada Holdings, 1983–1999; and Madara Ltd. Vom, Jos, 1987–1999.

He was Chairman, Nation House Press Ltd., Kaduna, from 1995 to 1999.

Ekiti Crisis: Fayose Sacks Permanent Secretary

Fayose
A Permanent Secretary in the Ekiti State Civil Service, Mr. Tunde Alokan, has been sacked by Governor Ayodele Fayose, it was learnt on Monday.

Alokan until his removal was the Permanent Secretary in charge of the Office of Establishment.
A source said Alokan was relieved of his job because of his closeness to a former state governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

It was learnt that Fayemi attended the burial of Alokan’s late father held in Efon Alaaye in February which the source said did not go down well with the powers that be in the state.
But Fayose, while confirming the dismissal of Alokan on Monday night, said it had nothing to do with Fayemi attending his late father’s burial ceremony.

The governor, who reacted through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, said, “The governor has the power to hire and fire. The position of a permanent secretary is political and is at the discretion of the governor; enough of this blackmail.

“Fayemi also sacked some permanent secretaries while in office, so what has happened is not new. The governor is not aware that Dr. Fayemi attended Alokan’s late father’s burial, so attributing his sack to that is cheap blackmail.”

Fayemi appointed Alokan as permanent secretary in January 2012.
Another Government House source explained that Alokan’s elder brother, Tokunbo, who is a Director on Grade Level 16 “is also on his way out of the civil service.”

His predicament was also linked to Fayemi’s appearance at their late father’s burial.
A source said, “After the burial, the following week, his elder brother who is also a civil servant was asked to report at the Office of Establishment.

“A panel was set up to investigate Mr. Tokunbo with the younger brother (Mr. Tunde) mandated to chair the panel an offer which he turned down.

“Although the two of them were to be sacked the same day, that of the elder brother was put on hold to pave the way for his investigation and interrogation by the panel.

“Since his younger brother turned down the offer to chair a panel raised to try Mr. Tokunbo, another person will be appointed to perform the task and your guess is as good as mine on the result that would come out of the panel.”
